Go Figure!

There used to be a Consignment Shop in the Short North called “Go Figure”.  So, first I need to admit something to you.  OK?  OK.  If you think I have lots of clothes now, you have NO IDEA what I used to have.  I could have clothed 4 women of many different sizes.  It was shameful.  Several years ago I took a look at my closet and said…well, I think I just made an exasperated noise and started sorting the clothes.  They were in bins, under the bed, piled high in the closet, on the floor, in the basement.  I didn’t even know how many I had!  I Googled “consignment shops in Columbus, OH” and found Go Figure.  They specialized in sizes 10 and up.  I happened to have sizes 10 and up!  I went in and met with the owner.  Although I personally found her things overpriced, she knew how to run that place!  This wasn’t a thrift shop.  Things were marked and then after a month on the shelf the price was cut in half.  If things weren’t sold she gave them back to you.  You didn’t just drop things off.  You waited to see if they sold and for how much and collected part of the money.  (Disclaimer:  I realize that this is how consignment works and most of you already know that.  But I had never consigned before Go Figure so, humor me on this!)  I filled out some paperwork and dropped off 5 of my beloved dresses.  So beloved that I forgot I even had them.  (eyeroll)  But I must admit, somehow it was still painful to part with them.  In the back of my mind I always thought I would eventually get to wearing them.  Le Sigh.  On my pick-up date I went to the store.  All of the dresses had sold and the owner gave me a $66 check!  OK, forget about the nostalgia over the dresses!  There was cash in my hand and that’s all I cared about!  Peace out, dresses!  Woo-hoo!  I started more aggressively cleaning out my closet and bringing things into Go Figure.  To be honest, folks, it became like a part time income.  Every month for probably 5 months I picked up checks for nearly $175.  I didn’t miss the clothes.  In fact I felt happy that they went to good homes and that I made some cash in the process.  Eventually, Go Figure closed.  The owner paid a steep overhead in The Short North and couldn’t afford to hire other employees so she was worn out.  I think she really just wanted an adventure and had a good time during the years her store was open.  Every night when I’m getting ready for bed, I look at the bin of clothes I have that don’t fit me.  I wonder if I should take them to another consignment shop and get some money instead of just letting them sit there waiting for me to fit into them.  Am I motivating myself or wasting space in my already tiny bedroom?  I’m in this new habit of not wanting any excess but I’m also trying to encourage myself by using the clothes in the bin as a reward for weight loss.  Since I can’t buy any new clothes this year it feels scary to consider giving any away, you know?  But like my brilliant friend Jen always says…”By the time you fit into those clothes you’ll want new ones anyway.”  Yeah, things don’t stay in style forever!  What are your thoughts?

Outfit of the Day: Thursday!

This morning I found a denim skirt in my closet that I haven’t worn for at least a year.  I remember getting it at the thrift store but not being sure how to wear it.  It’s kind of a tulip skirt but longer than I’m used too.  Now that I have my brown boots it looks fabulous!  Remind me to buy some of these boots next year in black.  They are just the best thing since sliced bread.  And you’d be hard pressed to find someone who loves bread as much as I do.  Also, I know it’s freezing cold right now in Ohio (well, not to me because I like the cold but technically…it’s freezing) but it’s almost March so it won’t be in a few weeks.  I realized this morning that I won’t have a chance to wear all of my winter clothes before Spring comes.  Geesh, people.  When you can go an entire season without wearing everything and barely repeating any outfits, you have a lot of clothes!  So no whining about winter or fall clothes will be tolerated!  Spring and Summer?  That might be more of a challenge.  It will be fine.  But there might be more repeats and creativeness!  In other news, I have started a food journal.  I wanted to go to Weight Watchers but the sad reality is that with classes, homework, and fulltime work I don’t have an hour for myself.  But school is for me.  Even though it’s not fun, it’s what I’ve chosen to make a priority in my life right now so I need to recognize that.  Speaking of school, I just scheduled my classes for summer and it is gonna be BUSY!!  Autumn should be better.  At least summer is short?  Sigh.  I don’t know.  I certainly won’t have time to shop, so I guess that’s a plus!  How am I going to do all of this?  Working out, going to school, working fulltime, studying?  How do people with kids do this?  I only have a hound and she is very needy.  Teehee.

Outfit of the Day: Tuesday

How is it only Tuesday?  It was a good day at work.  I had my annual review and got an amazing review from my former boss.  I mean, her only improvement plan for me was to work to get me a promotion.  YAY!  I got a 3% (the maximum) raise and my boss stated her case for me to be promoted since I'm already doing the work of someone a level higher then my title.  I was very happy!  This is the outfit I wore but now looking at it, I don't love the length of the skirt.  It covers my boots and the waist band is super uncomfortable.  I need to be comfy at all times!  And besides, I bought this skirt over 10 years ago at Wal-mart.  I'd say I've gotten my wear out of it.

Hound Update

Here is Betsy staring at my laptop case.  She really misses the days when we would online shop together.  Oh, how we'd laugh!  Those pants, that sweater, those shoes, that sweater and also that sweater...you know, I might not be remembering it correctly.  I'm not sure she helped me much and mostly I ended up with a credit card bill and clothes I didn't wear.  Hmmmmm.  Online shopping...I don't miss it!  :)

Outfit of the Day: Monday

I picked this dress out special today for my annual review at work and then it was rescheduled to tomorrow.  So I guess I'll just have to wear something equally fabulous tomorrow, right?  Of course, right!  I love this dress because it is super comfy and a great length for boots.  I got it for $14 at JCPenney Outlet a couple of years ago.  That place can be hit or miss.  They carry a lot of dresses that I would never have a reason to wear unless I was going to a wedding or something.  And even those are a tad mother of the groom for my taste.  I think this is technically a summer dress but this year I've decided to make all things work for all seasons!

Outfit of the Day: Sunday

I didn't take a picture on Saturday because I was helping a friend move.  She has babies so by the end of the day my sweatshirt was covered in the sweet potatoes I fed her twins and my jeans were covered in dust.  But rest assured...I did not shop!  I was too sore and tired!  Today's outfit I LOVE!  I got the scarf at Clothes Mentor for 5 bucks on New Year's Eve (I shopped until the last minute!) and found this black sweater in the back of my closet.  That means I have 3 black sweaters.  Sure...why not.  They go with everything!

Outfit of the Day: Friday!!

Happy Friday, friends!  I am so freaking glad that the weekend is here.  I'll spare you the rants about my boss but let me just say...Ugh.  At least I got to wear something fabulous today!  And I'm still not shopping!

Outfit of the Day: Thursday

Um,,,nice lopsided pony tail, Em!  Oh well!  The outfit was pretty cute.  I love teal and combined it with my sneaky work jeans!  This week has been kind of rough.  I'm so tired and stressed about work.  Next week will be better in fashion and otherwise!

Outfit of the Day: Tuesday

So this project is going well, as far as not shopping.  But it's not going well, as far as my closet being stuffed to capacity.  It's so annoying.  But I'm reluctant to get rid of more than my one piece per month since I'm not allowed to shop.  I pitched a bra tonight.  It was no longer supporting the girls in their mission to rule the world.  That doesn't count as a clothing purge since I have no ban on buying bras...and I have enough of them to get through at least 6 months.  Sorry about the lack of pictures.  I've been forgetting to take them.  But I promise to get back on track and of course...not to shop!

Outfit of the Day: Friday!!

I do have a picture from Thursday but it's downstairs, stored on my phone and honestly...I'm too lazy to get out of bed right now.  Today I felt sassy in my jeggings (yes, jeggings), and over the knee boots!  My legs are long so they actually only go to the bottom of my knee but still...love them!  :)  I hope everyone had a very Happy Valentine's Day!

Outfit of the Day: Wednesday!!

Good morning, my friends!  This week has gotten better!  I'm kind of obsessed with this scarf and I know you've seen it before.  I could probably wear a different scarf every day for 3 months but instead I get attached to one and wear it out.  Oh, well!  :)

Outfit of the Day: Tuesday

I LOVE this scarf!  It's from Etsy and the only thing that I didn't love (at first) is that it's fabric rather than a typical soft scarf that I would buy at a place like TJMaxx.  It was also made in the USA by someone who does crafts as a side job.  That makes me happy.  And gives me hope that maybe someday I could make a scarf like this.  You never know!  Anyway, I went casual today because I had to do a lot of errands for work.

Outfit of the Day: Monday

Hey kids.  I am so freaking glad this Monday is over.  Didn't think my outfit was cute, didn't have a cute day or any type of cuteness!  A serious lack of cute. The week will get better!  Last night Betsy came over to console me and stole a piece of pancake off my plate.  Even my HOUND has turned on me!  Sigh.  In this picture I look like I'm going skiing.  I don't know, friends.  They can't all be winners.  But the point is, I didn't shop!

February Clothing Purge!

I’ve been thinking about what to get rid of in February.  I have a few clothing items in mind but after my trip to the Podiatrist last week I have decided that it needs to be shoes.  This morning I put on my pink and purple argyle cardigan sweater and figured it would be cute with my pink Target flats from several years ago.  They were like $4.99 and I get lots of compliments on them.  So I put them on this morning and look down at my feet.  Zero support!  My heel hurt just thinking about getting through the day with these shoes that are basically house slippers.  Into the trash they go!  They are so misshapen that I don’t even feel comfortable giving them to Goodwill.  So that was an easy decision!  I need to start being more mindful of my shoe choices.  Support is necessary to get through a day at a hospital.  No flip flops, no ill-fitting flats and no super high heels!  It’s just not worth it!  Stay tuned for March’s purge!

PS.  Below are my favorite kind of shoes!  Colorful and with bows.  BOWS!!  But I'm going to need to up my game on these.  No more Payless specials.  More flats that actually give support.  And I'll be using insoles.

Outfit of the Day: Sunday

Happy Sunday!!  It's SNOWING again.  Shocking!  So for lab this morning I wore my lace detail sweatshirt and boots.  Nothing fancy but I love this sweatshirt.  I'm not a huge fan of sweatshirts or the color white.  So it was very surprising to fall in love with this sweatshirt last year at CATO.  It has a lace detail which gets me every time and is a bit more flattering than just a regular hoodie.  I don't know.  I have trouble dressing really down so this is as casual as I get!  Our lab instructor told us to wear clothes that we don't care about but um...I don't have any clothes like that.  I love them all!

Outfit of the Day: Saturday!!

I'm digging this yellow color!  I love mustard!  I didn't think I could pull it off but I now have a cami and a sweater in that mustard color and I adore them!  Also love my star print scarf from Target.  And...my boots.  I know you are getting really tired of seeing them but it's just been so wintry that there aren't a lot of choices.  I tried to do something cute with my hair on Saturday but it didn't really pan out.  Oh, well!

Outfit of the Day: Friday!!

TGIF!!  If you look very closely at this picture you can see the hound in the background.  She's never far!  Right now I am sitting on my bed with my foot in a splint that is supposed to stretch of plantar fascia.  Um...that is ONE ROCKIN' Friday night!  Did I mention that before this I went to Target, CVS and Kroger?  Mmmmmm...wild.  Anyway, I'm wearing a "new" scarf that I bought for myself at Christmas.  I justified this purchase by using this scarf to up the total for free shipping on Zulily.com.  Teehee.  But I bought a bunch of other scarves for people as gifts so it's cool.  Right?

Stuff I Want (But Don't NEED): Navy Cardigan

Even though I like retro clothes, I would NEVER wear this exact outfit unless I was starring a high school production of “Grease!” (which I have done, thank you very much).  You know the thing that I mentioned a few weeks ago about leggings not being pants?  Still true!  So I would have to wear this top half with jeans on the bottom.  Sorry.  Anyway…I’ve been into navy lately and that is new.  I was also rather confused about that color because…is it neutral?  Can you wear it with black, brown, bright colors?  The answer is yes!  I love navy with white, red, brown, black and several other colors!  It’s a new frontier!  And I can’t buy any navy.  I had this fantastic navy cardigan with bows on the buttons.  Really girly…very me.  I wore it everywhere but shortly after buying it, I went on a backpacking trip thru Utah National Parks and lost it along the way.  I don’t know what I was thinking even packing it because I ended up wearing my sports bra and yoga pants the entire trip.  No make-up.  Certainly no need for a bow covered cardigan.  And now it’s gone.  Sigh.  But I do have a few shirts with navy in them that I like to wear with my red cardigan.  So, I guess I’ll need to weigh the pros, cons and versatility of a navy cardigan and save it for my birthday gift cards.  Otherwise…see you in January 2015, navy cardigan!!

Outfit of the Day: Thursday!!

Polka dots!!!  I love them!  Today I went to the Podiatrist to see what's going on with my left heel.  And I decided that I needed to look "cute" so here ya' go!  Polka dot sweater and sneaky work jeans!  The diagnosis is Plantar Fasciitis and I received a cortisone shot (ouch, by the way) and some physical therapy instructions.  Here's hoping I feel better soon so I can get back to walking!

1 Month...COMPLETE!!!

Well, well, well…I’ve been so busy not shopping that I forgot to commemorate 1 MONTH of um…not shopping.  YAY!  1 month down, kids!  And we are several days into February!  This month will be no problem!  It continues to be cold and snowy so I’m wrapped in sweaters and wearing my boots…a lot.  But I don’t mind!  The snow shoveling keeps my hands busy so I’m less inclined to grab my credit card and online shop.  Today I’m going to the Podiatrist for the first time ever.  I’ve had terrible heel pain for months and because I’m so stubborn, I’m just not getting around to getting that looked at.  The heel pain makes it painful to fitness walk (or walk at all).  And not walking is not going to help me with my goal of fitting into some of those too tight jeans.  So let’s do this, foot doctor!  See you tomorrow, kids!

Outfit of the Day: Tuesday!!

Please excuse the wires and my work bag in this shot!  I think I put together something cute yesterday.  The skirt is from a thrift store and I think I've worn it once before?  I love it!  So then of COURSE I get home and the zipper breaks.  GAH!  I'm torn about having it fixed.  I mean...the skirt was probably 4 bucks and it will cost more to replace the zipper.  But it's not like I have another skirt like this or that I can BUY another skirt like this for a year.  Drat!  Anyway...here was my outfit from Tuesday.

Outfit of the Day: Monday

I really am surprised that I wore this!  And even more surprised that I loved it!  I feel like this challenge is making me more creative in my clothing choices.  It's funny because when I looked in the mirror this morning I thought...Oh, that's cute!  It wasn't until I got to work that I realized the colors in this outfit don't really...how you say...ah, yes...match.  But, hey...I rocked it!  :)

Outfit of the Day: Sunday!!

Well, yesterday was sort of a non-outfit day.  Jammies.  But rest assured, I did not spend any money on clothes!  WOOT!  Here is my Sunday outfit.  I wore it to lab and out afterwards.  Sigh...so in love with those boots!

Outfit of the Day: Friday!!

Well, well...Betsy seems to approve of this outfit!  It was Friday so I busted out my boots (of course) and my JEANS!  I'm finding myself putting together things that I didn't really think "matched" before this challenge.  And I like it!  My mom bought me this orange print cami for Christmas and it goes great with my CATO short sleeved cardigan.  I am currently watching a documentary on Netflix called "Happy" about how some of the poorest people in our world are the happiest.  People that have 1/4 of what I have.  I'm going to remember those this movie when I start pouting about wanting to shop.
