Outfit of the Day: Thursday (and a haircut!)
I had a sassy outfit on Thursday! My "new" animal print cami (new meaning I've never worn it before) and I sneakily wore jeans because no one else was in the office. After work I went to get my hair cut by Ron! Ron is awesome and the only person I will allow to cut my hair in Columbus! He's hilarious and is able to straighten my super thick, curly hair with just a hair dryer and a round brush. After I see him I always try to take a few pictures to prove that my hair was straight. Because sure enough, the next morning it will be returning to it's curly ways. So...here is a documentation!

What's the now? Clothes Mentor wants me to give them my old clothes (which as we know I am rolling in) and they will not only give me cash but a $10 off coupon?! Great Cesar's Ghost that sounds GREAT! However, what would I do with that $10 coupon? I would have to use it for accessories or shoes...even though this add also stated that they are having a MASSIVE CLEARANCE BLOWOUT! That would be difficult to avoid. Sigh. What do you think? Get money for some of my clothes now or wait to fit into them? Are piles of too tight clothes inspiring or discouraging? I wonder if Clothes Mentor has motorcycle jackets? (sits back in chair to daydream about motorcycle jackets...falls off chair)

Stuff I Want (But Don't NEED): Motorcycle Jacket
I want a motorcycle jacket NOW!! It's the first thing I've felt like I NEED since I started this challenge. Give it to me, OK?! I'll give you the money! Buy me a gift card. Sigh. In my head it would make me edgy but I would wear it with pants AND over dresses so it would work for all occasions. Did you hear that, people? Over dresses! No one has ever thought of that, right? I would wear it open and casual like..."Oh, this old thing?" and I would be as young and hip as Serena on Gossip Girl, as cool as The Fonz and as bad ass as well...someone who wears a motorcycle in a non-ironic way. You know, like they actually ride a motorcycle. James Dean, I guess? I like that it's a bit masculine. I've always loved that Diane Keaton menswear look but never can pull it off because of a large chest and non-lanky body. There are things I look good in but a tie and double breasted suit jacket are not among those things. GAH! I suppose I could use my birthday gift card (if I even receive one) from my mom to purchase something like that. But that's the kind of logic that makes me a bad shopper. Let's see...use $50 to buy a pair of versatile capri pants and a cardigan for my birthday or purchase a black motorcycle...in May. I think this one is just going to have to go on the list of things I covet for next year. I've already filled 2 legal pads. Ahem.

Outfit of the Day: Wednesday!
Well, hello there! Today's outfit is from a shopping spree that I went on last summer with my friend Jen! I picked it up for $12 at JCPenney and then proceeded to shove it in my closet, never to be heard from again. It's a cute (technically) summer dress that's sort of retro and I ended up loving it paired with a cardigan and boots! YAY! I think it's actually flattering and I usually don't like light colors on my top half because well...that's the part of my body I like to minimize. I wore it out for an after work drink at 16 Bit Bar downtown. It's a casual place that is FULL of 80's video games! That's my kind of place! And this outfit fit in with the jeans and the few people who were in their work attire. A good day! Hope yours was fabulous too!

PS. Betsy was less than impressed with my outfit but begrudingly posed for a pic on her bed.

Work Clothes
So, by far the people I see who would be most likely to actually notice my clothes are my co-workers. I don't work in an extremely fashionable industry. I work at a hospital and it just occurred to me that if I were to do this challenge 18 months from now I would probably be wearing scrubs (I'm in nursing school). GAH! What was I thinking? Should have started this challenge for 2015 and then for most the year I wouldn 't have to worry about clothes at all except on the weekends. Sigh. Well, too late now! I don't have a huge budget so I don't have seasonal clothing, besides a few sweaters. I also don't have much of a distinction between my work and play clothes. For the most part all of my tops, jackets, etc work for the office and the weekend. I didn't really plan it that way. I'm kind of a snappy dresser in my non-work life so it just kind of happened. Not that I'm opposed to my robot pants and a sweatshirt (as I proved last weekend). But sporty clothes don't flatter me and I always like to look "put together" as a friend once called me. My ideal outfit would be dark jeans, kitten heels, a cute cami (of course!!) and a jacket. I love fall and winter because I love to layer and wear a lot of accessories like scarves. Anyway...what was I saying. Ah yes...work clothes! I found a great article on www.learnvest.com that discusses budgeting for work clothes. I won't be doing that this year, but next year I was thinking I should take a Visa gift card and put a certain amount on it for the year. Like $500. That's what I get...and that's it. You know? There have probably been years that I've spent less than that. I have no way of knowing because I am so bad at budgeting for clothes! Below are some of the tips for buying work clothes from the article. I added my comments too!
Clothing Is Not an Investment (Emily says: Yeah, I have no desire to pass my custom Halston gown down to my daughter. This isn't Gossip Girl.)
“Our homes and retirements accounts are our investments,” says Horowitz, but shirts and shoes aren’t. Rather than buying expensive items you fantasize will last forever (they won’t), she recommends you shop regularly and slowly replace worn out basics each season, picking up just a few trendy-but-affordable pieces as you go.
Don’t Do Event Shopping (Emily says: Oh, I do this! Last summer I bought 4 dresses in like 20 minutes during a shopping spree with a friend who said everything looked fabulous on me.)
Horowitz warns that people overspend when they’re under pressure, whether it’s because they’re attending a wedding or going out of town. Instead of buying a new dress for your coworker’s wedding, could you borrow a dress from a friend? If you feel you must buy, start looking as soon as you get the invite in order to find something in your price range.
Accessories Make the Outfit, Anyway (Emily says: So, true! This shopping ban is really helping me to utilize my accessories!)
Stretch your wardrobe with accessories. Have a few good staple items, and then make them look different on a regular basis by mixing them up with simple accessories.
Shop for the Waist Up (Emily says: A great tip. But personally I love dresses.)
Horowitz counsels her clients to keep the “see level” in mind. Own two pencil skirts and two trousers, and wear them into the ground. Mix things up with jackets, shirts, jewelry, shoes, and bags.
Don’t Obsess Over Brand Names (Emily says: I can't believe people care about brands.)
Don’t let yourself get emotional about labels. Horowitz loves lines like Forever 21, Club Monaco, and Zara for cute, on-trend, and affordable items.
Buy for Work and Weekend (Emily says: That's what I just said! YAY!)
If you work in a very formal environment, this rule may not apply, but try to buy separates that work for day and evening whenever possible. You’ll feel better going out after work, and you’ll get way more bang for your buck, too.
Know That Personal Shoppers Aren’t Just for the Mega Rich (Emily says: I've never considered this. I feel like I would be too nervous.)
Another awesome secret: Personal shoppers at Bloomingdale’s offer an array of services for free! These salaried employees don’t work on commission, so they’re not trying to push you into buying stuff you don’t need. They can help you get new pieces and even work with items you already have in your closet to build out your wardrobe. Our friends who’ve gone this route have been extremely happy.
I hope the above tips help you! It's amazing how many sites and articles I'm finding on people who have issues with over shopping for clothes! We're in this together!

Outfit of the Day: Tuesday!!
Today...was...COLD! But I'm keeping warm in yet another Marilyn sweater. I kind of wish I had some different styles of sweaters. But not enough to break my promise to myself of no shopping! Today I wore my pinstripe pants and my pink and silver pin. I love pins and think they're something I might want to collect more of...like scarves! They make my outfits more unique.

RULES!!
Reader Questions
Well, I don’t know if these people are actually readers, but
they are my friends and family who have been asking about what I’m doing
here. When I told my mom about my
challenge she sort of gasped and her eyes got wide. Ha! My
mom is a very even keeled person so this was a funny reaction from her. So, I’m sorry that I never really laid out
the rules for this challenge BEFORE it started but hopefully this will help!
Question: Is your ban
just for new clothes? Can you shop at
thrift and consignment stores?
Answer: Sigh. This project is about not buying any
clothes…at all. I had to make that rule
because even when I was shopping a lot I considered myself “thrifty”. This meant that I found a lot of fabulous
(and sometimes unnecessary) clothing and very good prices! Clothes Mentor is great for a deal! But my problem is that the great deal could
be on a black fringy mini-skirt and I would buy it. $10 for THIS?! Don’t mind if I do! But then I don’t. I don’t wear it. Because um, Midwestern hospital office
employees that spend their weekends watching Netflix don’t have much use for
those types of clothing items. That
black fringy mini-skirt is sitting in my closet. I didn’t even try it on at the store. Once I found out that it was $10 plus 25
percent off my eyes glazed over and I opened my wallet. Maybe someone I’ll wear it? That was my reasoning, I guess? But I have a closet full of things I’m not
wearing. When I look at it, I see dollar
signs. What could I have done with that
money if I didn’t spend it on that useless skirt? Now, we all need to have some fun
pieces. Don’t get me wrong! But this year I need to buckle down and WEAR
those fun pieces instead of acquiring more.
I promise if I wear that mini-skirt I will post it! Don’t you worry your pretty little head about
that. Oh, geez…sorry about
rambling. No new clothes. 365 days.
That’s the deal.
Question: What about
accessories?
Answer: When I
started this project I told myself that accessories are OK to buy. The first reason is that I’m so picky. All of my earrings, bracelets and rings fit
into one super fancy Tupperware container.
The second reason is that I don’t want to be completely left out of
shopping with my girlfriends. If I go to
the mall with a friend I’d like to be able to browse SOMETHING. So, I’ve chosen accessories. I have plenty of panties and bras. I don’t have too many PJ’s but I consider
those clothes so too bad for me.
Basically, I felt that accessories might spruce up the clothes already
in my closet and help me work with what I’ve got in there. I would like to buy some 99 cent headscarves
from Ohio Thrift and see if I can pair them with lots of denim capris and
cardigans this summer! I’m a bit worried
about gym clothes. But honestly, I can
get through the year. I don’t have to
look fancy at the gym! People, I have so
many scarves. You don’t even want to know. But I’m sure at some point in this challenge
I will count them. I do not need more
scarves. (repeat)
Question: Why one
year?
Answer: Because I
think it sounds impressive!
Question: What about
gift cards?
Answer: Yeah, I can
use them. My mom sometimes gets me a
gift card for my birthday (in May). If
she does I will either save it, or use it for a white cardigan (something I
feel I actually NEED for summer.) I
won’t just be begging people for gift cards, though. That feels dishonest!
Question: Are you
worried?
Answer: Yes. I’m worried that I will fail or stop blogging
to stay accountable. I’m afraid of summer. I really don’t like summer very much and
sometimes shop my way thru it, if that makes sense. The high temps and humidity stress me out and
I just don’t like the clothes as much.
I’m worried that I’ll cave when the weather turns warm. But I’m working on a battle plan (see above
for thrift store head scarf plans). I
just need to try and keep it fun and realize that it’s just temporary. Also, if I don’t like summer clothes…why spend
money on them? I have enough maxi
dresses to get me thru to fall.

Outfit of the Day: Monday!!
I know the cure for a case of the Mondays! It's duck lips, a cup of coffee and a cape thingy that I found in the back of my closet! YAY! I've never worn it before but I love it! It's basically like wearing a blanket to work and you can fling it over your shoulder when you leave a meeting. I bought this several years ago for 10 bucks um...somewhere. I think at the outlet mall with my step-mom? Who knows?! That's what happens when you over shop. You don't even remember where you bought something and somehow manage to keep it for nearly a decade before you even wear it. A good example of my shopping habits is that I remember the cost of this cape thing but not where I got it. Sigh. This girl likes a deal!

New Segment: Goals for the Week 1/27/14
In an effort to keep myself on task I will be posting weekly goals! Remember, this blog isn't all about lack of shopping! It's about me saving money, getting healthy and just being a more productive and tolerable human. 10 goals per week sounds like a lot to me. There will probably be a lot of repeats. I'll check them off as I do them each week! WOOT!
Stay Houndy!
Em
Goals for this week:
1. Go to the gym once (I know...that's like NOTHING but nothing is exactly what I've been doing lately in regards to exercise.)
2. One home workout
3. Clean my house--that upstairs bathroom is not looking pretty!
4. Pack breakfast everyday. I spend way too much money on food at work and I don't even like it.
5. Pay off Chase Credit Card. It's only $46 dollars.
6. Blog my outfit everyday! YAY! I like this goal!
7. No Coke at work. Oh, people. I have been in the habit of getting a fountain coke at BP on my way in. I can't even imagine the calories and sugar. Bad, bad habit! Especially for a girl trying to give up pop!
8. Get on the floor and play with Betsy. I love that hound!
9. Take a tutorial of my lemur pedometer. Still don't have that thing figured out!
10. Study.

9 Week No-Scale Challenge
No scale for the next 9 weeks. Well, folks.
I went to the doctor and things weren’t great. My weight is the same but my blood pressure
is thru the freaking roof! My doctor
wants me to calm down, sleep more and exercise more. For the next 9 weeks I am to get off the
scale and take care of myself. Stop obsessing
and start doing what I know I should. I’ll
have to weigh in at my metabolic screening at work on February 7th. Can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to
that. (eyeroll) It’s amazing how much personal information we
have to give to get the insurance we pay for.
I’m really not one to complain but it’s getting a teensy bit
creepy. Of course you can say that you
don’t want to participate…but then you don’t save the $20 on your insurance
each month. OK, then. I’m having a stressful time at work. I am overwhelmed and lonely and I know how
dramatic that sounds. Long story short…my
boss whom I loved quit to take a better position within the hospital. So she left and they started interviewing
candidates for her vacant position. I
applied but was denied even having an interview. So I wasn’t considered for the job but I was
qualified for the 3 months of covering the duties of that job plus my own
duties. Super classy. Eventually, I think the higher ups feared
that I would jump ship and gave me a TEMPORARY 10% raise while I covered. OK, I’ll take it! Then the weirdness of interviewing my new
bosses began. I’m glad to be involved in
the process but there is nothing weirder than interviewing someone who will
soon be your superior. Where do you see
yourself in 5 years? Will you care if I
grab at coffee every morning at 10:00AM?
Will you let me wear jeans on Friday?
I just tried to be professional and keep in mind the horror of being
interviewed. I can easily talk to most
people so most of the interviews ended up being OK. And what can you tell from an interview? Most people can turn on the charm for 60
minutes. ACK! Clearly, I should not work in HR. I’ve “heard” that HR extended an offer to an
external candidate that I really liked!
She will need lots of training from me and also on our charting system. But there is now light at the end of the
tunnel! Perhaps my blood pressure will
be coming down soon? I’ve been having
trouble sleeping and I’ll admit, I’ve been so sleepy that I haven’t been going
to the gym. I’ve GOT to improve those
habits so that I can feel better and so I won’t be put on BP medication. I’m supposed to take my own BP twice per week
and record that numbers for my doctor.
After I report to her, we’ll evaluate the numbers and look at our next
step. I’ll keep you posted, of course
with my healthy progress and my weight loss after my next appointment. The scale is not good for me. While I want to know my weight, I often let the number discourage me. If I'm up in weight I say to myself...Well, then what's the point? I eat what I won't and don't go to the gym. My doctor recommends that for awhile I let her do the weighing. I agree. Thanks for listening!

Outfit of the Day: Snowy Sunday!!
I got all dressed up for you! Black cardigan, chevron scarf and the super fashionable red wellies with fish print! I had a test this morning so I had to trek out in the snow, like it or not! I'm only going to look so cute when I need to dress for icy conditions AND a class that's held in a laboratory. You know what I mean? Afterwards I went to the grocery and now I'm preparing to put on some sweat pants and study some more. Excitement!
Betsy LOVES the snow! She'd stay out in it all day if her mama would let her!
The lighting is pretty on the porch. Even if I don't have much make-up on!

Snowed in Saturday!!
So, it's kind of cold and snowy outside. And I have a test tomorrow. So I've basically been in my pj's all day. I don't figure you want a picture of me in my fleece robot pajama pants. We'll skip today since I basically didn't get dressed! OK, ok... here is a picture of one of the robots.
Awesome, right?!
So, I've been a tad reluctant to do this because it will show you just how out of hand I am with my clothes but I took some pictures of my closets. Plural. In this closet you'll find all the shirts I wear and fit into.
I've never counted my scarves but as you can see they are a thing with me. When I started this challenge I went through my closet and put everything all my shirts in this one. And all of skirts, pants and dresses in this one...
But wait...there's more! In the bin pictured here, there are clothes that I am still a size or two away from fitting into.
Keep in mind that I used to have TEN of these bins full of clothes that didn't fit. Granted that was almost a decade ago, but you can see that this shopping thing used to be a problem. Buying clothes thinking that SOMEDAY I would fit into them and then I would be a better person. Prettier, thinner, and therefore perceived as smarter, richer, more worthy.
I didn't mean to get all serious on you! With this blog I plan to keep it light, but I think it's important for me to let you know that there is reasoning behind this challenge. I'm not just trying to save money. I'm also trying to accept myself and realize that things, specifically clothes aren't what make me "me". Things don't make any of us better. They distract us from living our real life. Not the one we wish we are in or the one we are waiting on. I'm looking forward to this year and not just because of the clothes!

Outfit of the Day: Casual Friday
It it freak nasty cold outside, folks! I want to look cute but honestly, I need to feel cozy! It's been a rough week and even on a Friday I wasn't looking forward to going to work. Then, while exploring my closet I came across a sweater that my Meemaw gave me. It was hers but she never wore it. I took it but didn't think I'd wear it. But today I need Meemaw comfort so I made it work...and I loved it! I wore the big, comfy brown sweater with a scarf, my skinny jeans and my favorite brown boots. Loved it! It helped me so much today! It even smells like her closet...lavender and fabric softener. I hope your day was a warm and comfy as mine.

Outfit of the Day: Thursday
I'm not sure why I went all black and white artsy in this shot. But don't worry...the entire ensemble is black and white so it doesn't change anything about the outfit! I purchased this skirt maybe 5 years ago at a thrift store and forgot I had it. Or maybe I saw it in my closet but assumed it didn't fit? Not sure. But I'm SURE that I haven't worn it more than twice in that 5 year period. I got a lot of compliments today and got to give my favorite response..."Thanks! Thrift store!" I love this response because it is both smug and thrifty. Essentially I got a fantastic deal AND you won't be able to buy this skirt because it was second hand to me. Who knows where it came from?! It's an original! OK, I'm kidding about the smugness. But I will admit that I like telling people about my thrift store steals! Some people get really excited because they also love a great deal. And some people sort of scoff because they would never be caught dead in a thrift store. I'm not bothered by that and I don't blame those people. It can be weird to think about wearing someone else's old clothes. But if you're in the mood it's great fun to scour the racks and sometimes find an item you could never afford otherwise. I have found designer skirts (with the tags on them!!) for like $6 at Ohio Thrift! You could get addicted to that feeling, let me tell you! Try it! You'll like it! And I don't know about you but I'd rather have 20 funky thrift store skirts for $2 a piece than 1 skirt from Macy's for $70. I'm a hoarder that way!

Closet Purging
In addition to not shopping (gulp), I am going to purge one
item per month. Yeah, I know that’s not
a lot. But when you don’t have anything
new coming in, it seems CRAZY to get rid of ANYTHING. Madness, I tell you! Anyway, I’m going to do it because my
closet(s) are packed to the gills. I had
this great idea when I found an old hunter green tank top in the back of my
closet. Tattered, pilling and a size
28. What the heck, Emily? I wear a 20 up top. So that’s as silly as holding onto a size
small or medium top. It’s never going to
fit. It had flowers at the top but they
were all frayed. I couldn’t even give it
to Goodwill so I pitched it. I should
have taken a photo, I guess to prove that I did it. So my January item has been pitched! Woo-hoo!
Right now I’m excited about this purging. But check with me in July when I’m clinging
to a ratty cardigan that I “simply cannot part with”! I’m actually hoping to kill 2 birds with 1
stone on this one and purge my closet of things that no longer fit me. I’m maybe 20 pounds away from fitting into a
ton of pants. I need to make that
happen. More on that soon! I went to the doctor and it wasn’t
pretty. Sigh.

My Camisole Addiction
How many camisoles can one girl own? The answer, apparently is 38. I had counted 36 but then found 2 more in the laundry basket. Wow. I knew I loved them but...man. Here's the thing. I have spent a lot of my life covering up my ample bosom. Women THINK that they want bigger breasts but just trust me...they don't. When I was 13 I wore a C cup. So, from that time I have taped them down, wore turtlenecks and piled on layers to make them less um...flashy? Then a couple years ago I discovered the Lane Bryant camisole. Heaven! It's lacy, comes in a lot of colors and covers EXACTLY what I need it to while still looking feminine. These camis solve the problem of layering and are LONG ENOUGH (another huge issue with a tall, busty girl). Hooray for these camis! I love the lace at the bottom too! I love lace! So I SHOULD feel ashamed of the fact that I have so many. But I really don't. I wear them 6 days a week on average. I can't recommend them enough! Some times I even find myself saying...maybe I can put a cami UNDER this tank top which is under this shirt which is under this jacket?! Sigh. I've purchased camis from other places but I never like the material and they are never long enough. When this year is over...you'll find me buying more of these beauties! I just can't help myself.

Outfit of the Day: Tuesday
First of all, it feels like Thursday. Sigh. It's cold here in Ohio, kids! So I pulled out my trusty CATO poncho sweater and my dark wash jeans and stayed warm at work! I'm not technically allowed to wear jeans to work but when it's subzero degrees, bosses are more forgiving. I love the marbled look of this sweater and the details (buttons and collar). It's very soft and warm. Of course, underneath I wore a camisole (grey). Also, please notice my chain bracelet from Target. YAY! I love funky bracelets.

Stuff I Want (But Don't NEED)--Homeland Edition!!
I’ve been watching a lot of Homeland lately. I don’t know how I feel about it but I love
me some Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin!
It’s an exciting show but there are a LOT of coincidences and I always
have a hard time believing them. But my
favorite thing on the show is the suits.
I’ve always wanted one. The last
one I had was purchased by my mom for speech and debate. It was black with tapered legs and one of
those extra-long 90’s jackets.
Nice! I’ll try to find a picture
for you. I wore that thing out! I’ve been reluctant to by a suit in my adult
years for 3 reasons
1. Cost
2. Buttons—They aren’t always kind to an ample chested dame.
3. My weight fluctuates and if I invest in a suit, I want to wear it for years.
1. Cost
2. Buttons—They aren’t always kind to an ample chested dame.
3. My weight fluctuates and if I invest in a suit, I want to wear it for years.
I’m thinking I might look into one after this challenge
ends. After all, I can always have it
tailored if my weight changes. I want to
get a jacket, skirt and pants so that I can wear the pieces separately to work
and create a ton of different outfits. It
will feel really special to invest in something nice for myself. I have a history of buying low quality items
and wearing them for the time (usually less than a year) that they last after frequent
washings and general over-wear. I’m not
sure if “over-wear” is a word but I’ve decided that’s what I do with several
cardigans in my closet! I came across a threadbare
black cardigan with a hole in it yesterday.
Even though I know it’s crazy, I don’t want to get rid of it. It’s like a security blanket to me. It’s almost as if I don’t remember the 15
other cardigans in my closet.
(eyeroll) Anyway…a suit is going
on the list of clothes to buy after this year is up! YAY!

Outfit of the Day: Monday, Monday...
As I said, I'm not thrilled with the quality of the pics but I'm working on it. Also, I have a really dark house with very little overhead lighting so it's hard to find the right spot for a pic! Argh! Anyway, here is the outfit of the Monday. I'm pleased to say that several people, including some strangers, complimented me on this ensemble. I am always happy to wear my black boots! And there was no tights crisis this morning. YAY!
Skirt: Clothes Mentor
Cami: Lane Bryant
Cardigan: Kohls
Shoes: Zappos (Lifestride)
And because Betsy wasn't available during my outfit photo...I've included one of her relaxing on her bed. She has 2 beds in one room. But she's not spoiled or anything. :)

Outfit of the Day: Sunday Party!!
Sunday was a big day!
Class in the morning, party in the afternoon, dinner in the evening, and
a lot of driving! I needed something
comfy and warm. So I went for the
sweater my mom got me for Christmas and my beloved CATO boots!

Outfit of the day: Saturday
Well, this was just a casual outfit to run some errands. They can't all be exciting, people!
Scarf: Zulilly
Shoes: Plato's Closet
Cardigan: Goodwill
Jeans: Target
Cami: Lane Bryant (I still need to count how many I have. My friend Amy guesses 30!)
I made a mistake a wore the flats because it was nice when I left in the morning. Then in the late afternoon it started snowing like crazy! I like snow but I needed my boots. Oh well. That's Ohio weather!

Fabulous Advice!!
Found this great piece on xoJane by Michelle King. Instead of stopping her shopping habit all together she set up rules for herself about what she was allowed to buy. These are great tips and I will use them after my ban is lifted on January 1, 2015. (weeps)

1. Quality Must Match Price:
Now, there are plenty of stores that I regard as being "splurge stores" that I think are worth it. I don't mind spending more money on clothing, just so long as that "more money" is buying me "better quality." But there are certain stores that will charge, like, $350 for a polyester maxi skirt that will crumble to dust in your hands in about a month.
So, how do you figure out what is actually worth the steeper price and what is just a gross and terrible lie? There area few things you should examine.
The very first thing you should is check out the material. Natural fibers (silk, wool, cotton) will always be worth more than that fake stuff (polyester, acetate, nylon). Next, check out the stitching. Quality stitching will have about 8 stitches per inch. Take a look at the buttons and zippers. The buttons should not be loose and the zippers should move smoothly. These are the three easiest things you can do to make sure you're getting a quality item.
Now, I'm not saying you should go out and pay $200 on a plain T-shirt just because it has better stitching than one from Target, and I'm not saying you shouldn't buy the $12 "leather" shorts from Forever 21 over the $800 real ones just because the zipper is smoother on the ones made of actual cow, but I am saying that you should get what you pay for.
2. Three Outfits Must Be Able To Be Made:
A mistake I oft make is that I'm like, "OH! I LIKE THIS THING! LET ME GET IT!" without considering how that thing would mesh with what I already own. So, now I have a rule that I must be able to put together three outfits made up of the piece I'm considering purchasing and pieces already in my closet.
Ideally, these should be three very different outfits for three different occasions but, hey, not everything you buy can be such an overachiever. Bonus points for this rule: It forces you to get creative with what you have in your closet.
3. You Must Not Already Own Two Similar Pieces:
I own four chambray button-downs because I love chambray button-downs and also because I'm stupid. I keep buying them! And, like, fancy Madewell ones! What is wrong with me! Here's the deal: I know what I like and what looks good on me, and it's so easy to just keep buying more of those things. But, damn, a girl only needs so many knitted sweaters, tight skirts, and chambray shirts, you know? Just becuase you like something, doesn't mean you need eight of it.
4. Do Not Shop For The Person You Wish You Were:
I like to imagine there is an alternate universe somewhere in which I use Pinterest to find new recipes, and can wear white without spilling coffee on my person, and remember to write thank you notes, and always smell like vanilla. Too often, I find myself shopping for this Michelle.
I own a dress from Anthropologie that has elephants all over it and four separate bows on it. Like, what? Why would I ever get that? There's nothing wrong with it, but it's just so incredibly not my style. It's really easy to be sitting in a dressing room and think, "I could totally be the type of person who would wear a maxi skirt made out of feathers," and, I mean, cool if you are, but don't pretend to be something you're not.
Basically this rule is "Do you. Not some weird, fantasy versh of you."
5. Do Not Online Shop At 3 In The Morn:
Do you have a faux leather bustier? Oh, you don't? Weird, because I do! I got it at four in the morning on NastyGal! I regret it a lot, but didn't return it because I am an awful person who would rather waste $30 than communicate with people at the post office!

Outfit of the Day--Stripes and Lace on Thursday!
I love this shirt! My mom gave it to me for Christmas. It's lacy and striped. The stripes are supposed to be unflattering but I've never really agreed with that theory. I wear them because I like them. The shirt is from Lane Bryant and I was sneaky today and wore my LB jeans to work! I also wanted to share a staple from my wardrobe for years. My red pea coat from Target. It's seen better days but I just can't part with it.
